Aluminum wiring, made safe and insurable.

Many homes built from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s have aluminum branch wiring. The wire itself is permitted in Ontario; the risk is at the connections. We assess it, make the repairs and get it inspected by ESA.

Why insurers flag it

ESA says aluminum wiring is safe when it’s properly connected and terminated. Problems come from the wrong devices and loose connections.

Connections loosen

Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper, and over time connections can loosen and overheat.

Wrong devices

Outlets, switches and connectors that aren’t approved for aluminum are a common problem, often added later by someone who didn’t know.

Insurer paperwork

Some insurers won’t provide or renew coverage without an ESA inspection and a copy of the Certificate of Acceptance.

Aluminum wiring FAQ

Yes. ESA says aluminum wiring is permitted and safe when proper connections and terminations are made with devices approved for aluminum.

Usually not. In most homes the fix is at the connections: devices and connectors approved for aluminum, installed properly. Some insurers have their own requirements, so we’ll check yours.

Homes built from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s are the most likely. The cable jacket is often marked “AL” or “ALUMINUM”, and you can sometimes see it in the basement or at the panel. Send us a photo if you’re not sure.

Often an ESA inspection and a copy of the Certificate of Acceptance for the repair work. We file the permit and book the inspection.
